Encampment River
Encampment River
After flowing out of the Encampment River Wilderness, the river flows through the towns of Riverside and Encampment, Wyoming. There is a public BLM access upstream southwest of Riverside known as Odd Fellows. In fact, this is the only public put in launch point on the upper stretch. Check current USGS Waterdata flow chart before your outing here: https://waterdata.usgs.gov/wy/nwis/uv/?site_no=06625000&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060,00010
The Encampment river then flows toward the North Platte River through private lands. Then, approximately four river miles east, you reach a state section called Baggot Rocks Access. The Encampment River is floated using river rafts only due to diversion dams and low private ranch access bridges. The river is usually floatable and fishes great starting the first week of June through July. Wade fishing is great most of the season after run off subsides.
This world class blue ribbon trout stream has prolific Salmon fly. Glolden Stone fly. Caddis. And most notably, heavy Green Drake hatches! Standard dry flies such as Sofa Pillows and Elk Hair Caddis work great. These wild trout do not get a lot of fishing pressure. Additionally, there is no need to over think your fly selection. Presentation is most important!

As the most notable tributary to the North Platte River. Wild trout during heavy Green Drake and Caddis hatches, have been known to follow insect clouds up from the Platte River and stage in different sections for periods of time. Due to private ownership, access is limited. Peak flows are typically during June and July for the best float fishing opportunities. Book early!
